LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOMES

1. Select the most appropriate investigative methods or information retrieval systems for accessing the needed information
1.1 Identify appropriate investigative methods and investigate benefits and applicability of various methods.
1.2 Investigate the scope, content, and organization of information 
1.3 Retrieval systems.
1.4 Choose and utilize efficient and effective approaches for locating information from the investigative method or information retrieval system.

2. Construct and implement effectively designed search strategies
2.1 Develop a research plan appropriate to the investigative method.
2.2 Use proper terminology by translating concepts into accurate keywords and synonyms by utilizing provided tools such as controlled vocabularies, thesauruses, or indexes.
2.3 Construct and implement a search strategy in various information retrieval systems using different user interfaces and search engines, with different command languages, protocols, and search parameters (use Boolean operators or other limiters).

3. Retrieve information using a variety of methods
3.1 Use various search systems to retrieve information in a variety of formats.
3.2 Use linkages among documents to identify additional information (follow cited references or hyperlinks).
3.3 Access full text information, both print and digital, read and download online material and data.

4. Refine the search strategy if necessary
4.1 Assess the quantity, quality, and relevance of the search results to determine whether alternative information retrieval systems or investigative methods should be utilized.
4.2 Identify gaps in the information retrieved and determine if the search strategy should be revised.
4.3 Repeat the search using the revised strategy as necessary.
5. Manage the information and its sources
5.1 Select among various technologies to maintain, organize, and manage information (save and organize information into files, folders, an accessible filing system, bibliographic management software, or Google Docs; or use a photocopier, scanner, or other piece of audio/visual equipment).
